NEW BOYS STREET DANCE CLASS

BUCKS SCHOOL OF DANCE has introduced a boys-only street dance class to their curriculum. Boys aged 11 and upwards can learn
to dance and increase their confidence whilst using up lots of energy.

Amy Opalko is the Street instructor and also has teaching qualifications
in Ballet. Amy is a highly trained instructor in this explosive discipline of dance, which is vital when having young, vulnerable bodies to teach.

'Children have been inspired so much by the talent shows on TV every weekend, such as Strictly Come Dancing, Stepping Out, and So you think you can Dance,' says Candy Barker who formed the Bucks School of Dance in 2010 with Karen Stuart (although it was previously known as the Pat Steel School of Dance and has been going for nearly 60 years). 'It has been wonderful for a dance school such as ours to see this surge of interest across the age groups and genders, and we hope we can meet everyone's expectations!

   Street Dance for Boys
will be held at Cores End United Reformed Church on Mondays from 6.45‐7.30pm. Visit
www.bucksschoolof

GIRLGUIDES ATTRACT MORE MEMBERS WITH NEW PROMISE

The new Girlguiding
Promise came into effect on
1 September.
The Promise that all girls make is the core expression of their values:
to be honest, helpful and considerate; to respect other people, develop your beliefs and have the courage of
your convictions; to face challenges; to be a good friend and to take action
for a better world.

The Promise girls and volunteers make when they join the organisation is to be updated to make guiding truly open to all girls and women, and to create
a space where those of
all faiths and none can
find a home.

‘We hope the new wording will help us reach out to girls and women who might not have considered guiding before, so that even more girls can benefit from everything guiding can
offer,’ says Chief Guide
Gill Slocombe.

   The new Promise reads:
'I promise that I will do my best: To be true to myself and develop my beliefs,
To serve the Queen and my community, To help other people and To keep the (Brownie) Guide Law.'

   Girlguiding is also
joining leading charities
in supporting The Daily Telegraph's 'Better Sex Education' campaign, to include guidance about the internet and social media
in sex and relationships guidelines for schools.

These guidelines have not been updated for 13 years, and currently include no reference to digital, leaving children to navigate this
area on their own.

Turn to our Education section for more information on sex and relationship education in schools.

NETBALL NIPPERS SUMMER HOLIDAY CAMP

Isn’t it interesting that many of
the activities for girls are silent: gymnastics, ballet, horse riding,
tennis (excluding the grunting!)?

Jayne Haines is changing this with her increasingly popular Netball Nippers classes. 'Netball and team sports are about communication and team work,' she says. 'It offers the girls the opportunity to run around and
be active in a structured and purposeful way.

   'One of the striking observations
we made this term was when we asked the girls to shout for the ball: "MINE!" At first, most were shy but
by the end of term they were all
really shouting!'

Netball Nippers' first summer holiday camp takes place on 30th, 31st July and 1st August at Marlow Sports Club (http://marlowsportsclub.org.uk/)

The cost is £30 per day and runs from 9.30am - 3pm each day. An early drop-off at 8.45am  can be arranged for an additional £6 and late pick-up at 4pm for an additional £8. Suitable for girls aged 6-8.

For more information, contact jayne@netball-nippers.co.uk, or visit

BABY LOVES SPANISH

The popular music and movement class Baby Loves Spanish, was founded by former Burnham Grammar School languages teacher
Ellie Baker. The sessions
offer parents with young children the opportunity to learn a new language in an environment that supports
the development of their
child through music, singing, movement and play.

According to Ellie: 'The best time for anyone to learn a new language is while they are still learning their own. This is why people who were exposed to a second language from birth or toddlerhood end up speaking more than one language effortlessly. It's a real gift to give a second language to our little ones.'

Baby Loves Spanish is offering free tasters in Windsor, Maidenhead,
Eton Wick and Burnham in January. To book, email ellie@babylovesspanish.co.uk.
