Cookham Mum of two, Kate Spicer and her husband John created a simple oak bike rack after struggling to find what they were looking for, hence, RacksRailsHooks was born.  They have since gone on to design and create more beautiful items which are now available to buy online.  I caught up with Kate  to find out more.....

Tell me about you?

I’m Kate, married to John and we have 2 sons, Jack who is 3 and Oscar who is 10 months. I’m from Hale in Cheshire but spent 10 years living and working in Turkey before moving to Cookham in 2013.  Before having children I lived and worked in Turkey for 10 years and worked as a translator once I moved back to the UK.   After meeting John, I worked for an architect, then we moved to Cookham. After having Jack

I worked as childminder for a year before having Oscar.

Tell me about RacksRailsHooks

We design and make minimalist lifestyle products for the home.   RacksRailsHooks started when we were searching for a simple Oak bike rack to display John’s bike on the wall at home. We couldn’t find anything we liked so designed our own which John made. A few friends liked the design and asked for one so we started to sell them online and RacksRailsHooks was born! The original Oak bike rack is still our most popular piece and we have sent them all over the world.

We have added new designs, types of wood and products as we have developed. Our most popular pieces besides the bike racks are; wine racks, valet trays, lamps and coat hooks.

What do you like most about having your own business?

Both John and I enjoy the freedom to try new designs, materials and adapt to people’s needs and requests. John has a full time job in the construction industry so he makes new products in the evenings or at the weekends.

What are your goals for the future of the business?

We’d like to continue to grow and see some of our pieces available locally in independent shops.

Did you have to do any business courses or training for your business?

I haven’t as yet, but am hoping to learn about promoting RacksRailsHooks on social media.  I will be taking over our Instagram and twitter pages which have been neglected recently and I don’t know where to begin!

What is the best part of having your own business?

We love being in direct contact with our customers and when someone is really happy with the product it’s great!  We want people to love them.   We also enjoy being able to do custom designs for people.

What's the best piece you've ever created? What's your best-seller?

The Oak bike rack was our original piece and is one of our best sellers. The Oak coat hooks are very popular - they are often used for hanging pictures or mirrors too.  John designed the charging valet tray for himself really but it’s popular too, especially as a gift. Our lamps and hexagonal wine racks were available at the House of Jar on Cookham High Street over the summer and were popular there.  We love the hexagonal wine rack and often give them as gifts to our friends.
