French language App for
kids is launched
Severine Jean-Theodore was born and raised on a beautiful French island called Martinique. She moved to Paris as a teenager for her studies, has now been in England for 10 years, and lives with her partner, Mark. She has recently launched a French language App for kids, called We Learn 4 Fun, and I just had to find out all about it…
We Learn 4 Fun is an App that encourages children to learn a new language from age four, with the help of three loveable characters: Cheeky Monkey, Dizzy Dino and Mucky Puppy. It includes interactive games, such as hangman, as well as catchy songs, a story mode and colouring.
‘The idea of the App came about when I was unemployed and slightly bored of the corporate world,’ Severine admits. ‘I previously worked in international sales, growing UK businesses overseas. One day, I was brainstorming with my best friend during an afternoon tea, and realised it was an opportunity that I’m passionate about and wanted to explore further.
‘I thought: “Wouldn’t it be great if our children could speak the language when on holiday in France?” The App is built around real-life situations, like ordering food in a restaurant or being at the airport.
‘France is my birthplace so definitely has a special part in my heart. I love the French food, wine and lifestyle, and I would possibly retire in the South of France. France and England are both beautiful and similar in many ways.
‘My aim is to encourage young children to study French, but it’s also about enjoying being able to speak a new language, just for fun. I believe the earlier children discover a new language, the more they'll enjoy it. I hope to improve the chances of continued language studies at secondary school and beyond. And although the App is clearly aimed at youngsters, it's relevant to anyone interested in learning French and having fun. I know some parents who admit that they learn themselves whilst playing We Learn 4 Fun with their children!
‘I’d love for this App to be so successful that we could turn it into a popular cartoon that the kids would really like and interact with.’
So how did Severine go from working in sales to launching an App for children?
‘I didn’t do a specific business course but I did a lot of research and webinars, and I’m still learning a lot now. I was fortunate to work with a good App agency who took care of all my ideas, creativity and content, and put it together. I love that I’m doing something I enjoy and I’m truly passionate about. It’s nerve-wracking waiting to get people’s feedback and reviews, but I just hope that
they see the benefit of it.
‘I admire anyone who is assertive, confident, positive and who wants to make things happen. That’s what I’m trying to do!’
We Learn 4 Fun is available now for iPhone and iPad. Users can take advantage of a free ‘taster’ version, and the full version costs £1.49.
