The Pet Nanny

So we've decided to get a dog. Is it really that old chestnut of having a puppy instead of a third child...? But we've always wanted a dog. Me, for as long as I can remember. But friends
and family have urged us not to rush into getting a four-legged friend, saying they're a big responsibility and can be restricting. So, we thought we'd do our research and have signed up with
The Pet Nanny to gain some experience of looking after a dog, and to help other people out with their pets while they jet off
on holiday this summer. I caught up with Sue, The Pet Nanny,
to hear more about her business...

Hi Sue. Tell me about you...

Soon after I had my son in 2002, I started The Pet Nanny. The Pet Nanny looks after owners’ pets when they cannot be there themselves. We offer a home-from-home service for dogs and we visit cats in their own homes.

Home boarding is the perfect alternative to kennels, where we welcome dogs into our  homes while their owners are away, providing them with the love and attention they are used to. During the time they are away, their dog can be on holiday with us!

I live in Marlow and have a small team of wonderful helpers. The dogs will
either stay with me or with one of my Pet Nannies, where they become part
of the family. We ensure their needs are met, and they receive plenty of care, attention and exercise. They receive at least two walks a day and have the run
of an enclosed, secure garden to play in. All our Nannies love dogs, so we are confident your dog is sure to settle into our home from home environment.

We also offer doggy daycare. We have them  for a stimulated and action-packed day, and owners can collect them in the evening, tired and happy.

Our pet-sitting service is for those who prefer to leave their cats and small pets (including rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, birds) in the comfort of a home environment while they are away.

I used to work in IT as an Account Manager. I have always loved pets, but never dreamt that I would work with them. I had never thought of this as a job until
I saw an a advert in the local paper looking for a dog sitter. I love the pets that I am lucky enough to ‘share’ with the owners. I meet some great people too – the owners and my helpers. I also enjoy the fact that it ensures I go out for walks
twice a day all year round!

It really is the perfect business for me as it allows me to work with animals, which I have always loved, and I have been able to be around for my son as well.

Do you have any pets of your own?

When I started the business I had four cats! I now have two rescue cats that we were lucky enough to adopt just over two years ago. We asked for cats that were used to dogs and we couldn’t have got two better cats. Ted, in particular, has some very special friends amongst our regular dogs!

Where is good to go walking locally with dogs?

There are lots of places. I live very close to the fields by the river at Gossmore
in Marlow.

What do you like to do locally?

It is important that I keep fit in order to be able to carry on doing my job! I enjoy going to The Marlow Club when I can, and playing tennis at Marlow Tennis Club.
I also enjoy good food and we are lucky enough to have some great establishments in this area, although we also like cooking at home.

How can people join up and become dog sitters?

I am always happy to hear from animal lovers who are interested in joining our team. The people I need the most are dog lovers who would be happy to host dogs in their own home. If they contact me, we can have a chat and meet up at their house, so I can see where the dogs would be staying.
