Sleep Under Parties

Having worked in hospitality for years, Marlow mum Helen Sprason
knows how to throw a good party. This summer, she has started
working on Sleep Under Parties – setting up a festival style camp
for a party in your home!

Tell me about you and your family/where you live…
I am mum to Lily, who is five, and Noah, who is two. We moved to Marlow back
in 2013 just after we had Lily and we fell in love with it.Its been a lovely place to have the smalls and even though a relatively small town, we have everything!
I work in the hospitality industry and travel all over the South of England.

Tell me about your business/parties...
Sleep Under Parties is a pretty new idea and I am thoroughly enjoying it. Being able to plan a party while working can be really difficult, so this was born out of that! I come to your home and set up a festival-style party. I bring beautiful handmade tents, mattresses, bedding, bunting, goodie bags, popcorn, a breakfast tray, inside camp fire and make it a really special slumber party. You can have just a couple of tents for a best friend package or you can have as many as you have space for! I then come back the following morning and take it all down and clear it away. I include a craft activity in the midnight feast goodie bag, something like spy decoding, flip-flops to decorate, picture frames for painting, nail varnish for pedicures – that sort of thing! I tailor-make it for the age of the child and hopefully they have a super party and make lots of memories.

Have you always been interested in doing this? How did you get involved?
Since having children, it has opened up my eyes to so many possibilities. I have taken the summer off my hospitality work to spend some time with the children and while I've enjoyed that, I decided I wanted to do something work-wise that would be grounding and fun, and also fit in with our lifestyle – that's where Sleepunder Parties came into play. I saw it and within the week I was signed up and hosting lovely parties.

What do you like about it the most? What did you do before?
The best thing about these are that every time I set up a camp for a little one it makes their day. It is, I know, quite corny, but it is such good fun. Being able to go and set up a festival-themed party sparks the imagination. It's also a great way to see the county. Already I have been to some villages I have never heard of and Buckinghamshire really is a beautiful place! We went to Great Kingshill this week for a party and we came across so many new woodlands, that the next day, we went back there on a picnic and long nature walk. Being able to explore has been a passion of mine since travelling back in 2000; it never goes away, but it changes when you have small children and being able to still explore with them helps us be excited.

What are your goals for the future of the business?
The main goal of my business is to deliver professional and exceptional quality, giving little people great memories.

Who is your idol?
This is a tricky one! I would have to say Coco Chanel. She came from humble beginnings, she had incredible style, didn't really care what people thought, she had exceptional vision and was a talented business women, who in a time where it was a man's world, she created a timeless business that continues to be at the top of its game with wonderful elegance.

What's in your handbag right now?
I don't know if I want to tell! Currently I have a Mulberry wallet, which was a leaving present from my work colleagues a few years ago, which is like my life with so many loyalty cards! Handbag-size Vaseline – I always need this for quick-fix lips, Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in colour BOY, Sleep Under leaflets, wet wipes, a small change of clothes for my son, Noah – he has recently been potty trained – and some snack-pack raisins, again for the kids as a 'just in case'.

What was your best ever party growing up or as an adult?
The best every party I have ever been to was when I was 20 and in Mission Beach, Australia, where I had been working on I'm a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here! and it was the wrap party. The hospitality was like I had never seen and it lasted for 16 hours – just out of this world!
