The Jelly Lounge

Jenny Wallace Silva and Tamar Clarke – two local mums and friends – have opened a new family club that appeals as much to children as it does to us. I caught up with Jenny to hear all about The Jelly Lounge in Windsor

Tell me where you/your families live.

Our families live very close to Windsor and our little ones go to schools in the area. Our girls go to the same school, which is where we met!

What do you love most about the local area?

We love Windsor  for its international mix of families.

Tell me about your new business, The Jelly Lounge

The Jelly Lounge was created by myself and Tamar to offer a premium offering in family leisure – in the form of a family club, and one that appeals as much to children as to adults too. By club, we mean a multi-service offering. There's a chef-led eaterie serving fresh food families actually want to eat, a play area for children, we offer parties and a whole host of workshops for babies, children and adults.

Have you always been interested in doing this? What do you like about it the most?

It was two and a half years in the making, and an idea way before that. The excitement we see as children enter the reception and the enjoyment we see from adults makes it all worthwhile. A regular customer was so relaxed one afternoon, she fell asleep in one of our yellow armchairs, safe in the knowledge her child was safely playing – this was satisfying to see, knowing we had created a relaxing place for families.

What prompted you to decide to take it that bit further and start your business?

The fact we are slightly bonkers and thrive on the challenge/fear!

What did you do before?

I am a brand marketeer from the drinks industry, then ran the family business for the previous eight years (a group of dental implant clinics). Tamar was cabin crew for BA for many years, and an inventor of a revolutionary cabin bag to carry toddlers around, called Bagrider, being sold around the world.

Did you have to do any business courses or training for your business?

We hooked up with some business mentors through Thames Valley Berkshire Business Growth Hub. I have 20 or more years of experience in  business. We needed a lot of resilience, tenacity and patience!

What is the best part of it? And the worst?
Seeing our very happy and regular customers, and seeing the team develop. The worst part? Seven-day weeks! We have to be disciplined to take time off to be with our families.

Who is your idol?

Sheryl Sandberg and her support for women in work is pretty cool.

Anything else we don't know about you?

I am half-Chilean and Tamar is from Israel.

What's on your bedside table right now?

The Power of Now and my anti-ageing Elemis night regime!

What's your ideal weekend?

A weekend away to the Cotswolds
