The Dragonfly Candle Company

A while back, I interviewed Meli from Facial Reflexions in Maidenhead and experienced facial reflexology for the first time. Now, Meli has extended her offering with the launch of The Dragonfly Candle Company. Somebody told her once that making candles is like cooking and she and her business partner, Syra, both mums, have been working very hard to find the perfect recipe. I caught up with her to hear all bout it...

Hi Meli. How are you? How are you getting on?

Good thanks. I'm still busy doing my therapies – Facial Reflexology, Japanese Cosmo Facelift, Reiki Healing, Bespoke Skin Care and Aromatherapy from my therapy room in Maidenhead. It is going really well. I am doing it along side our exciting new business and being a single mum of teenage twin girls.

As you can imagine, life is very busy and challenging at times, but I'm
enjoying very much what I am doing and feeling very excited about our
new business venture.

Tell me about your new business…

Our new business venture is called The Dragonfly Candle Company. We are basically me and my friend, Syra. We have been friends for about 17 years and now we are business partners.

The idea came from our love of candles and the little choice for completely natural options. Between the two of us, we had enough skills to make it happen. Syra is experienced in retail, being a qualified florist, and has a great eye for detail and creativity. I'm a qualified aromatherapist, having used and worked with essential oils for over 10 years, and my passion for health and natural products. I'm a full member of the Complementary Therapists Association and Cookham Complementary local group.

We both share our love for essential oils and natural health. We have had great fun working and experimenting with them. Also, we have in common being mums with no family close by. We both love and have a passion for cooking and everything that it involves; sharing it around a table with friends and family
as the true Spanish-hearted women we are. Somebody told us once that making candles is like cooking and we have been working very hard to find the perfect recipe. We have been testing and trying and experimenting for months from
our kitchens.

Tell me about the candles...

We make Hand Poured 100% Natural Aromatherapy Candles, with no nasties or synthetics in them. From the wax, which is soya, to the fragrance, which is a pure blend of essential oils, to the wick, which is cotton – all is natural. We have created five different and exclusive fragrances: Allure, Serendipity, Vitalis, Equilibrium and Christmas. In addition, we also make the more traditional ones, such as lavender, grapefruit, geranium and so on.

We make different size containers and fragrances. Apart from candles, we also make wax melts to burn in a burner, which we also sell.

At the moment we are taking orders and doing some house parties. Our website is nearly ready, but in the meantime we are using our Facebook page:

Here's what happened when I journeyed into bliss at Facial Reflexions in Maidenhead. I experienced facial reflexology for
the first time
and, wow, I'm never looking back...

Whenever I’ve been to a spa or had a treatment in the past, I’ve always
opted for foot reflexology as I love having my feet massaged, and it also
promotes wellbeing. So when I heard about facial reflexologist Meli Paramio
in Maidenhead, I was keen to try this relatively new treatment. As the face
is so close to the brain, facial reflexology is believed to work much quicker
than foot reflexology.

When I stepped into her sleek treatment room, lit with pretty fairy lights, with tranquil music floating from the speakers and an invigorating aroma drifting out of an oil burner, I instantly felt myself relax. Calm and serene in character herself, Meli handed me a glass of water and sat me down to talk about me, my health and how she can help.

‘I believe that in order to live life to our full potential and to achieve all that we want to, we must be at our best physically, mentally and energetically. If we are not well, that acts as a blocker between us and all that that we can be,’ she says. ‘We are all on our own personal journey through life. Illness, events, pollution and unhealthy diets can make our path cloudy by messing up our holistic balance and blocking our way. I intend, through my treatments, to bring you back to balance so you can see your path clearer.’

Meli offers facial reflexology, the Japanese Cosmo Facelift, Japanese Facial Massage and bespoke natural skincare. She is also a Reiki Master. ‘I’m interested in everything that is natural and I am constantly training. I only use my hands and aromatherapy oils to promote wellbeing and natural beauty,’ she says.

Meli went on to tell me all about what I was about to have, Facial Reflexology Sorenseinsistem. ‘It is a non-invasive holistic therapy,’ she says. ‘The face contains very powerful acupuncture points that are connected to areas of your body, it is rich in nerve endings and blood vessels, which means it affects the whole body. It is also beneficial to the condition and appearance of your face. It is suitable for all ages and genders. I even perform it on my 15-year-old girls – they love it.’

As Meli would only be working on my face, there was no need to remove any clothes except my shoes, so I lay down on the comfortable treatment bed and she tucked me up under a soft, fluffy towel. She told me to breathe deeply and began by applying a beautiful smelling rose oil in sweeping motions to my face. Then she started to apply gentle pressure to the acupressure points from the top of my forehead down my nose, and continued with tiny circular strokes all over my cheeks and around my mouth and jawline.

I could feel myself sink into a deeply relaxed state where all thoughts of the outside world had emptied from my mind. At one point I jerked awake as I realised I gave a little snore! I couldn’t believe it – I never snore! When Meli told me she had finished a blissful 50 minutes later, and I came round, I was totally at peace with the world. As I swung my legs off the treatment bed, I felt rejuvenated.

Meli gave me a fresh glass of water and we discussed how I felt and what she’d discovered – my hormones were a bit all over the place and I was stressed, which was showing up in the stomach… possibly a reason for me craving sugary treats. ‘There is always an improvement to make. And I have seen from experience that once you start feeling better, life starts getting better, good things start happening and all the pieces start falling into place,’ Meli says. But I felt good now!

Meli told me that the treatment would cause my body to start eliminating toxins, so I needed to drink lots of water. After thanking her for one of the most relaxing hours of my life, I hopped into my car and looked at myself in the rearview mirror. Wow, I was glowing!

I came away thinking I would definitely have the treatment again, especially with Meli. She even emailed me the day afterwards to check how I was feeling – what fantastic aftercare. She had warned me I could experience flu-like symptoms afterwards as the body eliminates toxins, and I did for a day, but

I felt it was getting rid of all the bad stuff in my body, and once that had disappeared, I was like a new woman. I would certainly recommend it to

other mums out there, in need of a bit of tlc and relaxation.
