The new place to go in Marlow

Cookham mum Alessandra Cesaroni and hubby Luca are Italian – from the same hometown of Sassari, Sardinia – and have a six-year-old son, Matteo, and an eight-year-old cat, Olmo. They have recently opened the Italian delicatessen and eatery called Satollo in Liston Court in Marlow... and you just HAVE to check it out!

Tell me about your family...

'Luca and I have known each other since 1989. We dated very briefly, and then met again in 2007, when I lived in London, and
we got married in 2008. We moved to Cookham four years ago, and now have a six-year-old son named Matteo and an eight-year-old British shorthair cat called Olmo.'

Congratulations on the opening of Satollo... tell me all about it.

'Thank you. We have recently opened an Italian delicatessen and eatery called Satollo, which in Italian means "replete, satiated". It is located in Liston Court on Marlow High street. It's a lovely spot with great outside space and lots of natural sunlight. We had looked for the right location for a couple of years, on and off, and had almost given up until we saw this place and fell in love with it!

'We sell fine Italian foods, which we source straight from Italy, and selected wines, prosecco, limoncello, grappa... plus a big variety of Italian cheeses, cured meats, olives and other antipasti. We freshly make gourmet focaccia and ciabatta to eat in or takeaway, and a great selection of cheese and meat boards. Our Italian coffee is imported directly from Naples and we also offer traditional Italian breakfast. We sell a variety of fresh organic Italian breads made especially for us by an award-winning bakery called Rex in Little Chalfont. They handmake baked goods right on the premises in
the original way, which means very slowly, to develop digestibility, flavour, texture and keeping quality, using the very best ingredients and organic flour.'

Sounds amazing. When can we come and check it out?

'We are open seven days a week. Our opening hours are

9am to 5:30pm (Monday–Thursday), 9am–9pm (Friday–Saturday) and 10am–5pm (Sunday).'

Did you always dream of doing this?

'No, not always. It's more my husband who has driven this idea forward. He is very passionate about offering authentic Italian gourmet products. I guess we love the idea of sharing what we love most about our country. We had enough of dreaming about it and not taking that first step forward. We talked and talked for years about what we would love to do and sell in our shop and what the place would look like. We looked at different premises in Marlow over the course of two years, but they never felt quite right until we saw this and we immediately felt "this is it". During the next few months or years even, we will continue to source the best foods from all parts of Italy and we also intend to introduce some typical Sardinian foods.'

What did you do before?

'My husband is a graphic designer and DJ/music producer. I have worked in optics for almost 17 years, 10 of which as a store manager.'

Did you have to retrain for your new business?

'We mainly had to do some food hygiene courses. I also completed my personal licence course, to be able to sell alcohol.'

What are your aspirations going forward?

'Build a loyal clientele at Satollo and always improve the quality of our products and service.'

What's your fave recipe? Can you share one with us?

'That's too difficult to say. I love food in general but am particularly mad about seafood and anything that crawls deep down in the sea. I love making calamari rings or mussels in garlic and tomato sauce (when I find good fresh ones).

My best recipe is something very simple but tasty, which my mum used to make all the time for us as children. It's nothing fancy, so you wouldn't normally make it for your guests, with the exception that I made it for a couple of mums and their kids once as I thought the children would like it. They absolutely loved it and the mums stole my recipe! It's called minestrina al brodo di carne: a very juicy beef and vegetables broth in which you cook tiny pasta shapes. Afterwards, you eat the beef, which is extremely tender and tasty from having simmered for two hours in the broth. Yummy!'

Who is your idol?

'My mum, who sadly passed away when she was only 48. An amazing woman. Strong, full of energy, great fun and lots of charisma! She was a painter. Very beautiful too.'

What else don't we know about you – but should?!

'I am very creative. I love interior design and changing the look of my home or friends' houses. I like painting old furniture, looking for tree branches and using them around the house, and using natural and reclaimed material in general. That's how the whole shop was made. Almost everything in there is reclaimed or made by us. I am constantly on the lookout for ideas for my home, as I like to change the look of it every so often. I also love drawing, but haven't done that for a very long time. My husband is very creative too, being
a graphic designer. He has a passion for everything vintage, especially from the '70s and '80s: old magazines, music, advertising, photography and vinyl. He also produces music in his spare time, which he has very little of at the moment!'
