Holiday in Holkham
Looking for a family break at a seaside town, with golden sands, windswept walks and activities for kids? Look no further than the North Norfolk coast... We stayed at the Victoria Inn, which stands at the entrance to the Holkham Estate and is, to put it simply, idyllic. The Vic has 20 individually designed luxury bedrooms - ours had two rooms and two bathrooms - and well-behaved dogs are allowed too!
In the hotel restaurant, we tried the venison from the estate's herd Fallow Deer and the succulent lobster. And in the drawing room, you can help yourself to complimentary brandy and newspapers to read by the fire. Outside, there's a lovely playground and outdoor bar, where you can sit and while away an hour or two.
Head down the driveway to the boardwalk, and follow this through the pinewoods until you reach the Holkham National Nature Reserve - unspoilt glorious golden sand that stretches for miles and miles. The brochure says it's: 'Somewhere to catch your breath in a busy world, where sky meets the sea.' And it's true. I have never seen such wide horizons, and there's tidal pools and sand dunes for endless family fun!
Another beach not to be missed is the popular Wells-next-the-Sea - here, you can paddle next to the seals basking in the shallow waters. The beach cafe here is excellent - and there's even a bar for your four-legged friend!
On our last day in Norfolk, we couldn't miss the chance to visit Holkham Hall and its woodland adventure play area. The girls loved the tree houses and high-level walkways, swings and zip wire. Entry to the gardens is free once you've paid the £3 parking charge! You can hire cycles to explore the parkland or follow the nature trail. In summer, you can even hire a boat on the lake. The courtyard cafe serves lovely food and you can dine alfresco, and don't forget to visit the gift shop to bring home some memories of your family break.
