TV talent speaks at Hub
He has worked extensively in TV, and last Tuesday evening, his talk at our first Media Hub of the year went down a storm. Founder and Global Training Director of The TV Training Group Brian Naylor covered the principals of good communication and how to adapt them to the camera – and the audience were captivated.
The networking group, set up by Parfitt Media and MumsaboutCookham.com to bring media types together, met at the Bel & the Dragon in Cookham. And the two hosts and Cookham-based journalists, myself and my good friend Sarah Parfitt, were delighted to have Brian as our special guest.
Brian started his career in the entertainment industry over 20 years ago where, as a Cruise Consultant, he was responsible for training presentation, communication and stage craft skills for light entertainment staff. He went on to work extensively in television with contributions on the BBC, Sky Sports and The Horse and Country show, as well as hundreds of appearances on the SKY TV platform for Vinnapris Wine Channel, Asset TV and County Focus. In 2008, Brian was asked to judge the reality TV show Search for a Presenter, which aired for two seasons on Life TV. This lead to an engagement as Director of Showcase 24’s breakfast show, as well as directing numerous short programmes for the Slimming and Fitness Channel. Brian’s role now is to ensure that high-quality training and course delivery is maintained throughout The TV Training Group worldwide and with offices in London, Sydney, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai and soon the US, the demand for Brian’s unique training approach and experience has never been higher.
Our members found Brian's talk enlightening – after all, most people need to make online video content these days. Those interested in sales and marketing videos or TV presenting also found it useful. Brian is a charismatic speaker and many people wanted to chat to him personally afterwards. As usual, our guests enjoyed drinks and complimentary canapes while networking.
Journalist, media trainer and consultant Sarah Parfitt says: 'Coming from a radio-producing background, I found Brian's talk really interesting as it is a quite a different skillset. We have now planned all our bi-monthly meetings for 2016 and we have lots of treats in store including Dan Simmons, a reporter on the BBC News Channel's Click programme in April and Hero Brown, an award-winning blogger.
"There are an estimated 265,000 freelance professionals working in artistic, literary and media occupations in the UK. Freelancing and working from home brings with it lots of advantages for free spirits like myself, but it can be isolating on occasions too if you are used to working for a big organisation like the BBC. At the Media Hub, our aim is to share knowledge, tips and experiences but also to have lots of fun.'
Media Hub member, freelance journalist and Editor of Exclusive magazine Ros Sack says: 'I always come away from the Media Hub bursting with ideas, inspiration and lots of new contacts! Brian Naylor’s lively presentation was a great start to an exciting year of events for the Hub and it was great to see so many new and familiar faces.’
We would like to thank our sponsors Cloud DNA, the Stanley Spencer Gallery for the use of their screen and the Bel & the Dragon for hosting the event, Mah Images and Caroline Field Photography, and Purinto Printing.
The next Media Hub gathering will be at 8pm on Friday, 15th April at the Old Butchers Wine Cellar in Cookham, with speaker Dan Simmons from BBC Click. He will be giving us an insight into being a reporter and producer on the programme while guests enjoy some cheese and wine.
