National Obesity Awareness Week

By 2050, almost half the people in the UK could be obese - that's pretty scary. But we can do something about it. This is Natonal Obesity Awareness Week, which aims to increase awareness of how we - and our children - can be healthier.

I spoke to Sima Stannage, who runs Sima's Action Kids and has an MSc in Exercise and Health Behaviour, specialising in children, to find out what we can do as parents to help our family lead more active lives.

Sima, who set up her Berkshire and Buckinghamshire based company in 2005, says: 'Reducing the levels of obesity is all about re-educating people about lifestyle and the best time to start this is with very small children. If we ensure that children, even toddlers and babies, have active lifestyles, then as these children become teenagers and move into adulthood, they are more likely to ensure that physical activity is included in their daily routine.'

Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the UK, so it's vital young people learn about eating right and keeping active. 'Physical activity should be seen as just as important as brushing your teeth,' says Sima. 'If everyone did a little bit more exercise, then, combined with a healthy balanced diet, the majority of people will

be able to immediately reduce the health risks associated with obesity.'
